BLAME GAME: DIVORCE IN THE 21ST CENTURY- MOTHERS OR NEW GENERATION WIVES?

by

Like many of you already know, the 17 month old marriage of  actress Tonto Dikeh has packed up and as each day passes, new reports emerge on the real reason behind the crash of the once believed ideal relationship that I admit made me lash out at my man once or twice.

Asides reports that her millionaire husband, Olakunle Churchill was frolicking with his skinny actress PA, fresh reports released by popular blogger Stella Dimoko Korkus claim that the actress left her home because she was physically abused by her philanthropist husband.

Before you judge me, I am not about to condemn the actress for doing what she felt was best for their young child especially as I have experienced the humiliation of domestic violence and if I ever found myself in her shoes, I'd run ten times over. The crux of this article actually bothers on the reasons for the high rate of divorce in our times. Who takes the larger blame, our mothers or our inability to exercise  the saintly virtue of marital bliss- Patience.

This brings to mind a conversation I had with my mom a few years ago. I asked her how she managed with my dad for nearly 20 years and even when an opportunity was placed on her lap to enjoy some peace in the arms of another man, she vehemently chose suffering and agony. My mom replied "Da, when people come to marry you and your sister, nobody would say a word if they hear that your daddy was never a father but they will look at you twice if they found out that your mother chose the arms of another man. They would not care IF your father was a beast, they will care that your mother did not endure. They would say you will be just like your mother, forgetting that you have just as much as your father in you as you have of me. I m enduring for you and your sister".

You see, every mother would tell their daughter that patience is the key to a successful marriage because that was what their mothers told them. Patience for them meant taking a few slaps when the king of the yard felt like slapping someone around. Patience meant turning the other eye when the King felt like sharing his, no make that HER LEGAL PROPERTY to the next pretty girl in sight. Patience meant waiting till he was old and bedridden with prostate cancer or partial stroke so that she can travel the world to be with her children each time they call for Omugwo. Patience to them was a long and painful journey that remains unsuitable for 21st century woman.

In these times of serious peril, I for one know that I don't want to add to my problems by being stuck in a prison of pain, humiliation and anger with only the hope of old age and death to keep me warm at night but my views automatically disqualify me especially for sons raised by the above mentioned mothers. This is because they spend so much time telling their daughters lies, leaving their sons to emulate their fathers. You see the son would grow with the impression that his wife's body is his belonging and his body solely his business to do with as he pleases.

A friend once shared after I told him that I saw the husband of a popular female figure at an Abuja club messing around with some little girls, "As long as the man provides for his family, it's nobody's business if he cheats. There is nothing wrong with it".  This is exactly the problem.

90 percent of the longest marriages lasted that long because the women were strong or perhaps foolish enough to patch up while the 10 percent was for true and mutual respect. I want  to be the kind of woman that patches up despite being born in this century after all, that is God's directive but I can only be that for the kind of man who understands that he cannot decide to tear down a house because he knows he has an in house builder. The kind of man that is ideal is the one who wants no less than he gives.

I insist that our mothers have failed us. They are the cause of the marital woes of the 21st century. They have dropped horrible examples of what an ideal marriage should be and now, wanting to go contrary to the status quo would make you the outcast. If you doubt me, ask any child who grew up in a home where violence both emotional and physical was the deal and they would tell you that they never want to relive their experience but then again, it is different for the girl child and the male child.  The male child would in future, find himself emulating the aggression of his father while the girl would constantly be on the defensive, not wanting to let her guard down or find herself in an abusive relationship.  How then do you expect children whose realities were twisted from the start to maintain a perfect relationship? It would only takes the will of God and the right spouse to pull a marriage off.

Note that the only exception  to the above rule are girls brought up in communities where female battery is a norm, so they tell themselves that a man's show of love is his ability to knock them around. This is however, gist for another day.

PT 2: Am I Not Attractive? Why Don't I Have Chykers?

by
If you missed it, here is an excerpt :

"You know when shit got real? When everyone around me began talking about what this chyker got them and what the other one promised to get them. Something had to be wrong with me. Cars didn't stop to offer me  rides, guys didn't beg to take me for lunch or promise to fund my fun time.  To make matters worse, my sister's leftovers kept telling me how they should have asked me out instead. No guy used DJ KHALED's voice to offer me money "To spend for no reason". I hated and still hate to beg so my broke states were usually so long lasting" .

At the start of this year, I learnt something valuable. Something I saw as an inadequacy was actually a gift from God.  I learnt most importantly that being attractive is not all a woman needs to be successful. Ladies, you do not need a thousand and one guys to convince you that you are attractive, all you need is one guy who believes the sun rises and sets on your face. You see I finally got my host of chyking bees. They came in their gadzillions bearing gifts and lofty promises.

Pause! Why increase your body count for things that you can afford on your own?  Towards the end of this year, I was challenged with a huge trial that all the male chykers that I had in abundance couldn't solve. Why? Because I never asked and the ones I asked, I chose loans.

Although the title of my epistle makes you feel I have a problem, actually I once felt like I had a problem but the truth is my list was never scanty, just filled with 80 percent idiots who hoped that one day, the booty would slide in their direction. The dedicated ones offered juicy packages that would have seen me cruising in all expense paid trips outside this humiliating country but I can boldly shout that although the conditions were not exactly exciting, I am very proud of my achievements in 2016.

Lady! Stop giving relevance to men who make shallow promises just to slide in only to rush off to be with the women they have cursed before you to prove a point. Do not waste your time trying to be or look like other girls, be the girl they all want to look up to.

Lady, yes you, drop that dream that one day, a tinted Range Rover Evogue will park outside your house and remove your parents from penury. The truth O' Clock is the rich are marrying the rich and sleeping with the poor while that "Ultimate man" kinda guy is looking for some rich man's daughter to knock up and wife. Wake up and hustle now! Better be a priced possession than a sperm container.

PEACE 🙏🙏🙏🙏

PT 1: Am I Not Attractive? Why Don't I have Chykers?

You know I'm on my office desk, facing my computer and wondering what in God's name put me up to this. I have gone over this over and over in the last three hours and the harder I try to convince myself to open a blank MS document and write what I am being paid to write, the more my heart keeps telling me someone needs to read this just to feel fine.

I did share with my sister and my bestie that one of the hardest things I have ever had to live with is being a twin. It is my blessing but it remains my curse. This is because, she is my exact opposite. People are too quick to compare us making me feel  inadequate because I'd rather just let my head down, never wear makeup or else I have been poked, not a fan of matching colours and unconsciously walk with a determined "stay away" strut.

Summary in effect is while my mates learnt how to perfect their eyebrows, shave their legs and walk with that feminine bounce, I was too busy making sure I defended my weakling sister ( who by the way now fights for me ) so much that I became the tom boy and defender of the universe. While my mates were learning the perfect products for face contouring, I was too busy dreaming of building my empire and perfecting my "no man can help me with my shit" policy.

You know when shit got real? When everyone around me began talking about what this chyker got them and what the other one promised to get them. Something had to be wrong with me. Cars didn't stop to offer me  rides, guys didn't beg to take me for lunch or promise to fund my fun time. To make matters worse, my sister's leftovers kept telling me how they should have asked me out instead. No guy used DJ KHALED's voice to offer me money "to spend for no reason". I hated and still hate to beg so my broke states were usually so long lasting. Small secret, I even sometimes felt my mom was disappointed because I never had the chyker who would come to the house, offer  her money or buy her beautiful things. My twin was the star kid. Thankfully, we shared the same clothes so my cover was never blown. For the records, all of these stopped in 2016, my year of serious awakening and self realisation...

NOTE: I am taking the cue from my reader who feels my articles are too long. It feels so good to be back!

HOW BEST TO MANAGE YOUR LIFE, PASSION AND A 9-5

by

We might as well skip introductions and head straight to the point. Believe me when I say guys, I have learnt the hard way when it comes to managing my time and getting the job done. For some of us who manage a life, nine to five  and still want to run our passion, managing twenty four hours is an herculean task. Time just goes by before you can get a grip!

PICTURESQUE

by
No matter how hard you try, the world will criticise you for wanting to ride on eagle wings. They will goad you for not being regular, for not being ideal, for wanting more than you deserve. How else do you make up for the lonely nights while you wait for the mate that propels your being? Since you must kiss the thousand toads, I suggest you kiss them with your head held high and your crown not tilted for one second! I wrote this poem some years ago after a bitter situation and I can't think of a better time to share it. It is rainy season after all **winks***

GOD WANTS US TO BE SINGLE…

by

Those who know me well know that I am hardly a fan of “inspirational books” because I preoccupy myself with the notion that they contain information that is logical; anyone with common sense knows consciously what these books preach, the author just creatively reconstructs the language and sells to you gullible readers. How foolish I have been!

My brief self-story is simply to make you aware that the thoughts I share in this post are nothing of my so popular commonsense in fact after reading this book, I realized I know absolutely nothing about who I am and what my purpose in life is. The book is titled Single, Married, Separated & Life After Divorce by Myles Munroe and I’d advise you all to grab a copy fast (Advert freely given)!

Back to my subject, do you agree with me that God really wants us all to be single? Before you eat up my blog, let me first clarify my understanding of being single.

Taking away the contextual meaning of the word single, Dictionary.com defines it as being whole, sole, and unique. Etymologically, the word single garners its roots from the French and Latin words Sengle and Singulus respectively. Both imply individual or one piece.

With our definition well explored, I’d like to further add that God plans that we all be whole, individual, and unique as in single. If he didn’t, he wouldn’t have taken the pains to create us with different appearances, finger prints etc.

Now the idea of being single as a state before being married is also a point to consider (wait for it). Ever wondered the real reason for the skyrocketing rate of divorce in our century? Well Munroe accuses not the devil but our inability to pursue the right things and our inability to build concrete foundation before marriage and I agree.

Now if being single is being whole, it implies that a person suitable for marriage must first attain that level of uniqueness or individuality before he or she is ready to be with another equally whole individual.

I must confess that I hardly know myself and I doubt most of you do. If you think you do, then perform this brief exercise. Take time out, ask people how they perceive you; your weaknesses and strengths. Some of the revelations will shock you to the bones. Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying to be married you need to be perfect, no! I am saying that to be married you need to click off a few things that I will highlight below:

Understanding the Difference between Being Alone and Being Single
Most of the time, we confuse the popular attachments of being single as being alone or lonely. For instance, when most people describe mature single women, they describe them as lonely and incomplete. That is so wrong. Like I stated earlier, being single means that you have achieved a state of wholeness or individuality. Being alone on the other hand has nothing to do with being single rather it implies isolation or exclusion. According to Munroe “some of the loneliest people in the world are in marriages. Loneliness is magnified when you marry, if you are not unique, separate, and whole, or if your spouse is not”. Again, I concur. Loneliness is a thing of the mind and not of the status! Hence, you can be single (contextually) or married but still be lonely. The remedy though is to be single (etymologically and spiritually). That way, aloneness takes on a new meaning, you no longer long for companionship from others but enjoy your own company because you have come to realize the individuality that God has designed( consider the illustration of Adam in the book).

Discovering Your Primary Assignment
Who do you see in the mirror? Can you say emphatically that you know who you are? Do you love yourself? Consider how fairly you treat other people as this will help you answer the self-love question. How well have you pushed God’s primary assignment or purpose for your life? Whilst on my way home last night, I overheard a pastor’s message about the things to look out for in a spouse. He said “men don’t marry a woman that cannot pray for at least one hour”. At first I was like “shey this man is ok ni”? but today I realize that if a woman cannot stand in the place of prayer for her home then she inevitably leaves her home open for the enemy to prance about ( are you sure you are ready for all that? ). Again, I recall the words of Munroe “you are only fit, or ready, for marriage when you are totally fulfilled in God”.

Why Do You Want to get Married?
Over time, I have realized that even Mama Zeus aka okachamara (know it all) wants to be married for all the wrong reasons. I know most of you are guilty but allow me point out my world class ridiculous reasons:

I Want Babies: the only knowledge I have taken from my precociousness is the fact that I love children. I love children so much that I am determined to have at least five of mine and many more from others. The natural fear that age is no friend of our dear eggs further presses the point of finding me a Papa Zeus and fast.

She is Just Following the Trend: everybody is getting married, getting engaged and bellanaija does not make it any easier. I want that diamond ring thrill and the fuss and frills of being a bride. After that what next?

Let me stop opening my bum…my point is I can’t think of one positive reason for wanting to get married. If you find yourself in my category then let’s do ourselves a favor and allow ourselves be conformed to the will and purpose of God. Pursuing individuality will yield positive results.

Now you might read from the beginning of this post till the end and still might not be convinced to become single before becoming married but I can assure you that one way the devil tries to affect the people of God is through marriage. He knows that it is an honorable institution designed by God so he will try to infuse the world’s perception which brings me back to the “who you are “question. Perhaps you have completed the stage of singleness and the “good egg” for your omelet isn’t around the corner. Worry not, keep your trust tight and keep the faith going. This is the right time to pursue God’s ministry. Occupy yourself with the words of Matthew 6:33 and in due time, the desires of your heart will be fulfilled.
"God wants us to be single before getting married"!

P.S: I implore you all once again to get yourselves a copy of this amazing book by Myles Munroe. May His soul rest in peace!
