I must admit, writing has become a medium of not just expressing myself, but also a healing tool. I have noticed that the more I write, the less I get in trouble with my mouth ( the unbridled palaver) and suddenly, I enjoy my solitude ( now I make extra efforts to get my alone time as I can't write with people all over the place).
Remember my rants from my last post? Well, I'd address my vexations in this post. Before I proceed, let me state emphatically that irrationality is one of my epic flaws. I can just expect everyone to think in a particular way and if they don't, I get all red in the cheeks. I know this is fifty shades of wrong but I'm sorry, that is just how I'm wired to think ( kill me) .
What would your reply be if I told you that all rich people are headed in one direction- hell! Depending on your perception and of course belief system, you might agree or you might not ( see, I'm improving) but I, totally find this statement, offensive, mediocre and any other adjectives, please fill in the gaps.
Anyways, that was just what a friend of mine spouted. At first, I was dazed by undiluted ,hard core ,shock as I never would have believed that someone so handsome and educated would utter such jargon but hey! Freedom of speech right?
It all started when I mistakenly told him that I was so lucky to have met my pastor on my jolly way to my interview and that he dropped me off in his Hummer Jeep. Omo you needed to have seen the way brotherly pounced on me ( like a lion o). According to him, my pastor is not even a Christian! To be fair to all, he made some points which I would like to share with you guys.
First he claimed that all Christians must be christ-like. Seeing that Jesus didn't drive Hummers and jets (their equivalents) , Christians also should not. He added that Jesus Christ (my Lord and messiah) while on earth, was poor aka BROKE !! As Christians, he continued, we must endeavour to be penniless at all times. In other words ( according to me) , when we seen money notes, we must FLEE!!
He did not stop there o! My guy went on to assert that the wealthy people in the Bible ended up badly although I don't know if we read the same Bible ( at this point, I truly wish I could speak French! ). He backed his argument up with the story of the wealthy wannabe guy who refused to abandon his wealth to follow Jesus. Before I could resurrect from the missiles already tossed my way, uncle blurted "do you know that rich people won't make heaven?" Hmmm...I rest my case.
Sorry but I can't rest it o! I live for these moments. Of course I replied him so I'd also share some of my counter arguments.
First, I pointed out that being christ-like involves various responsibilities asides being poor. Also, Jesus had a purpose on earth which did not include flexing his money but make no mistakes, Jesus was not a broke man! If I must point out, he had an accountant ( Judas Iscariot ). If he didn't have enough money, he would not have needed someone to handle accounts. The thing with Jesus is that he never placed material things or any other thing above his mission and his service to God. So there is nothing wrong with being a wealthy Christian as long as your money does not stand in the way of your service.
Now to the point of pastors owning jets and Hummers, please what is wrong with that? If a man of God works hard, serves his God, why won't God bless him. As far as I am concerned, my little church can not afford to buy my pastor that car so he worked hard for his money and for Christ's sakes, he bought what he wanted!
Now to the grenades that uncle dropped on my corridor. All the times I have opened my Bible to read, I have not seen anybody who served God in spirit and truth ( add wealthy) that ended up badly except Solomon whose situation was caused by his inability to make the right decisions and not, I repeat, not because he was rich. Look at Abraham, Job, Esther, even David, the faithful disciples (not among the twelve) that followed Jesus' teachings. Need I say more?
Asides the Bible, who would honestly not want the beautiful things of life i.e good food, education , shelter ? All these things cost money.
Finally, he said we do not practise Christianity in Nigeria. In his words "your pastor is just leading you to hell ". My reply to that is : it's not Nigeria's pastors that have the problem, it's the oversabis like UNCLE , people who won't attend any church but sit from the comfort of their beds to castigate other people's effort. If you feel these pastors are not getting it right, and you can't write about it, raise your hands in the middle of their service, then please be quiet or at least do the mirror on the wall therapy.
Enough said, guys when ever you read this, I would like to know whose side you are on ( team RICH or team POOR) or perhaps you have another team. Either way, I'd like to hear from you guys. Peace!
You are definitely getting better at this. I completely disagree with Uncle's school of thought. It is utterly false and misleading. Being Rich is a God-given right! I strive to be to be Rich because asides the fact that its just super duper cool to drive around in a Bentley, its also part of God's promises. This guy is obviously reading an Afghanistani version of the bible, someone should pls buy him a King James Version.
